• What is Mosaic5G?

  Established in 2016, Mosaic5G is a non-profit initiative fostering a community of industrial as well as academic contributors for open source software development to realize an agile data-driven 5G service delivery platform leveraging SDN, NFV, Cloud-native computing, and ML/AI technologies. Mosaic5G also intends to provide an open collaboration among its member community and open up communication channels with the relevant standardization bodies.

• Why Mosaic5G?

  Mosaic5G was formed to develop, promote, and share an ecosystem of open-source platforms and use-cases for 4G-5G system research and fast prototyping leveraging SDN, NFV, and MEC technology enablers in close coordination with the OpenAirInterface RAN and Core Network infrastructure software. We believe that significant flexibility, efficiency, and innovation can be achieved through the open-source and open-access policy.

• What does Mosaic5G currently offer?

  Mosaic5G provides four main platforms tailored to 4G with a well-defined set of APIs: (1) LL-MEC as a low-latency edge computing platform with mobile network core network controller, (2) FlexRAN as a software-defined RAN platform leveraging the SDN principle, and (3) JOX as a Juju-based Orchestrator for 5G Network Slicing, and (4) Kube5G as a cloud-native agile 4G/5G service platform. In addition, it includes a constellation of platform packages, SDK, network control application, and data sets under a common repository named Store. Three new platform is under development that will support both 4G and 5G.

• What is the relationship between OpenAirInterface and Mosaic-5G?

  Mosaic-5G platforms implement a set of extentable south-bound APIs and control protocols on the top of OpenAirInterface RAN and CN to enable monitoring, control, and programmability of each RAN and CN module from a controller-domain through its north-bound APIs.

• How Mosaic5G projects are governed?

• What is the license model?

  The license model is platform specific. Currently most of the 4G platforms opt for the Apache V2.0 license except for the underlying RAN platform, which is based on the OpenAirInterface and the OSA license. The new 5G platform will be released under OSA public license 1.1 (see OAI Public License).

• Who is building Mosaic5G?

  Mosaic5G is founded by Communication System Department of Eurecom as a natural next step to provide the required flexibility for the OpenAirInterface in the context of 5G. As of May 2021, Mosaic5G is sponsored by OSA and EURECOM.

• Who is using Mosaic5G platforms?

  Operators, service providers, vendors, and academic institutions who want to use it as well as to contribute and/or collaborate within its ecosystem. Please have a look at the member list.

• How do I sign up?

  All Mosaic5G resources could be accessed anonymously. If you plan to contribute, the create an account at gitlab.eurecom.fr, and send a signed copy of contribution agreement with your gitlab account to OSA or Mosaic5G Admin.

• Where can I find the contact information?

  The corresponding contact information can be found at the bottom of each page.

• How can I contribute to Mosaic5G?

  A potential contribution may vary from a use-case or PoC to a bug report/fix, platforms features, and new projects.

• Platforms

• Are the platforms are tightly coupled?

  No, as it depends on the use case and objectives. LL-MEC, FlexRAN, JoX, and kube5G may be used separately or together on the top of OpenAirInterface platforms. The Store components can either be used with the platform or with the offline datasets.

• What are the hardware requirements for each platform?

  Current software platforms require Intel-based PCs. The software is tested on the latest Generation Intel Core i7/i9, Generation 3/4 Intel Xeon.

• What are the software requirements for each platform?

  There is a certain number of dependencies that is managed through an appropriate build script for each platform as well as a top level Mosaic5G build script.

• Can I virtualize or containerized each platform?

  Mosaic5G provides both docker and podman images together with the Ubuntu Snap packages.

• What is the platform SDK and how do I use it?

  Each SDK provides a software development environment to facilitate the design, development, test and update of an application. It includes libraries that implement specific functions/methods complying with domain-specific semantics to enable apps with fine-grain monitoring, control, and programmability of the underlying network. The documentation of the SDK is automatically generated through the build scripts and can be found in docs directory of each platform as well as in the sdk/docs directory of Store.

• How do I develop a control app?

  First, you need to go through the API documentation, check and run the test app followed by the monitoring app with both offline and online data. Then, design and develop your control logics/algorithms using the SDK.

• Why should I join Mosaic5G?

  By becoming a member of the OSA, you choose to explore the open-source opportunities with our community and to support in enhancing, promoting, and sharing Mosaic5G for others.

• What is the cost of membership?

• Who are the current members?

  The current members can be found at the landing page of OpenAirInterface at OSA Members.

• What are my rights and commitments if I become a member?

  There are different rights and commitments per membership type that can be found at Join the OSA.

• As a member, how can I (or my organization) contribute?

  A member can contribute in different forms, for example by sharing the findings, use-cases, and PoCs or contributing to the code base.

• Community

• How big is the Mosaic5G community?

  Currently, Mosaic5G and OSA has more than 100 industrial and academic members and used in many collaborative academic or industrial projects.

• Is the community active?

  Yes. OSA is a fast growing community in the area of 4G and 5G with an average increase of 2-5 partners per month.

• Who are the current members of the community?

  The list of current partners is constantly updated in the main landing page of the OSA Members.

• How can I collaborate with the community?

  Either by joining an-ongoing project and contributing to the planned features or by creating a new project.

• Technical

• How can I report an issue (bug, instability, segmentation file, etc.)?

  Issues can be reported directly in the gitlab. The Issue Tracker is the place to add things that need to be improved or solved in a project. Issues can be bugs, tasks or ideas to be discussed. Also, issues are searchable and filterable.

• How can I contribute to the code base?

  Sign the corresponding Individual Contributor License Agreement(s) (ICLA) or Corporate Contributor License Agreement(s) (CCLA) on behalf of your company (check with your legal department). The signed licenses must be signed, scanned and sent to our team at Contribute to OpenAirinterface. Then contribute by means of gitlab merge request.
